EC to cease probe into Hungary’s Paks with Russia’s assistance

MOSCOW, Sep 22 (PRIME) -- The European Commission (EC) will cease investigation into Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant project with Russia’s participation as Budapest has provided all necessary explanations regarding construction of two new nuclear reactors at the facility, Bloomberg reported Thursday citing Benedek Javor, a Hungarian deputy at the European parliament.

Hungary has provided sufficient justification why the construction contract had been granted to Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom, he said.

Russia and Hungary signed a contract for construction of two VVER-1200 nuclear power units in 2014, but in September 2015, the EC said the project contradicts its regulations. In January 2016, media reported that the EC is investigating the project’s state funding, public access to data on the project and state procurement regulations.
